They are fun for everyone!

There are several leagues held at Hypertension Escape.

The below leagues all have their benefits, and the primary one is for the social activity that such leagues encourage. All ages, of all abilities, are welcome participants. There is roughly 25% savings from regular bowling; and, if paying by year, this can include even greater degrees of savings. There are prizes nightly. And, there is a bowling banquet and dance for the leagues. Also, all members of leagues are eligible for several other benefits: eligible for the sponsored strike-board.

Youth Bowling Canada

Youth Bowling Canada was launched in 1963 by the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of Canada and since then it has been the breeding ground for the talented individuals who, now as adults, can be seen on televised bowling events earning thousands in prize money. A program rich in history, the YBC strives to provide a friendly, social and exciting environment for some 30,000 youngsters weekly across Canada. An environment free of harassment and the many negative influences which can be found all too easily just about everywhere these days.

From an early age YBC members learn the joys of socializing with their peers in a positive atmosphere, and the satisfaction of self-improvement. Thanks to the efforts and dedication of thousands of adult volunteers, YBC members learn to improve their physical coordination, learn to appreciate the values of fair play and learn to take part in a team environment. In YBC, EVERYONE PLAYS! Unlike some sports where quite often only the more talented individuals are ever offered an opportunity to shine, in YBC everyone plays regardless of ability. Nobody warms the bench and everyone gets to have fun!

Throughout the bowling season, YBC leagues run several In-House tournaments which help acquaint the YBC member with the excitement and experience of tournament competition. Because the majority of YBC play (both league and tournament) is conducted on a handicap basis, a novice can win an event just as easily as a more experienced player. For those who are more skilled at the sport YBC offers the 4 Steps To Stardom, a championship event which begins at the house level, proceeds to a Zone Championship, a Provincial Championship and culminates at the YBC National Championships.

How do I sign up for YBC?

Simply contact your local bowling centre (as above). Signing up is easy and they can get you going in no time at all.

How long does the season last?

The bowling season typically goes from early September to March, but may vary by region.

How often will I bowl?

Leagues play once a week, typically on Saturday mornings. Many centres have alternate “shifts” for teens who work weekends. Leagues also allow for weeks when you’ll be away (on family trips, etc.) by having bowlers “bowl ahead” so that your team is not hurt by your absence.

I have never bowled before. Do I have to compete with people better than me?

All bowlers are given a handicap based on their ability, which ensures that everyone is on a level playing field. Everyone plays and contributes equally and the handicap system ensures that everyone is an important member of their team…..in bowling NO ONE WARMS THE BENCH.

What can I win?

Leagues differ, but almost all of them provide a banquet at the end of the year and award various prizes and trophies. Also, throughout the year there are crests that can be earned for achievement, participation, etc.

Am I bowling with people my own age?

The YBC is broken down into three age divisions. Depending on the number of bowlers in the program, you would bowl in a shift with those in your age category and meet many new friends. The age disvisions are as follows:

FIVEPIN: Bantams are up to 10, Juniors are 11 to 14,
and Seniors are 15 to 19
TENPIN: Bantams are up to 11, Juniors are 12 to 14,
and Seniors are 15 to 21
Additionally, there are usually special programs for those children under 7 specially tailored to the very young.

Can I bowl in tournaments even if I’m not a good bowler?

Most tournaments are played using a handicap system (or on a pins over average basis) so everyone has a chance to win, regardless of their ability. The philosophy behind these events is the promotion of sportsmanship and the development of experience in an organized event.

Do I need special equipment?

You need to wear bowling shoes, which can be rented for little or no cost at the bowling centre. Bowling balls are also provided at the centre. You can also purchase your own equipment through the bowling centre, or a bowling supplier.

Do I have to buy any equipment?

Everything you need is available at the bowling centre at no charge, or for a small rental fee.

What do I wear to go bowling?

Some YBC programs provide special bowling shirts to wear. Otherwise, loose fitting, comfortable clothing is fine.

How long does it take?

Bowling typically takes about 2 hours per week, depending on the size of the program.

How many games do I play?

Typically, most divisions play 3 games, however sometimes the younger divisions will play 2 games.

Do I get any free bowling?

When you register with YBC, you will receive 12 free games of bowling with your membership card.

How old do I have to be?

Depending on the league, you can start as young as 3, and bowl until you are 21 (Tenpin) or 19 (Fivepin). Bowling is a LIFE SKILL and becomes a recreation and sport that you can enjoy well beyond your youth. Many people in their eighties and nineties continue to enjoy bowling as a means of maintaining a healthy and social lifestyle.

Is it team or individual competition?

Both – bowlers are placed on teams, and compete against other teams and there is also individual competition with the other players in your league.

Where can I learn about the rules of bowling?

Your coaches and program director will teach you the basics. Sometimes the manager will have some information on bowling as well.

My child is physically challenged. Is there special equipment he/she can use? Is the centre wheelchair accessible?

Some centres are equipped with wheelchair devices to aid in bowling. You can check our website www.bowlcanada.ca for a list of wheelchair accessible bowling centres.

My child is mentally challenged. Can he/she participate in YBC?

All bowlers can participate in YBC bowling. However, please check with the centre’s manager if your child requires some extra attention or assistance to be sure there are volunteers available.
